As Athens was the birthplace of classical Greece, this site offered some of the best urban walking routes in Europe, you would have the opportunity not only to attend a high-quality scientific meetings, but also to enjoy late summer tours around the city. Furthermore, the Argosaronic islands that were sprinkled over the Argosaronic Gulf and were steeped in ancient mythology, which was an ideal destination for a post-conference short and quick escape for those who wished to enjoy natural beauty, historical treasures, unique architectures and a romantic atmosphere.
This site also included content that had to do with The European Federation of Organizations in Medical Physics (EFOMP – which what the url of this site actually stands for), which was alive for just a short period of time (late 2013 to mid 2015), and stated that the current membership covers 35 national organizations and 3 affiliated national organizations which together represent more than 5000 physicists and engineers working in the field of Medical Physics.
Below is some of the information I have recovered from the site’s past.
The aims of the federations were to foster and coordinate the activities of National Member Organizations, collaborating with national and international organizations, encouraged exchanges and disseminations of professional and scientific information, and exchanges of Medical Physicists between countries, as well as to work for Europe-wide recognition of Medical Physics as a regulated profession in all member states as well as Medical Physics as a health care profession.
They drafted an exciting scientific program which covered all the state-of-the-art subjects on medical physics and its application to radiology, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, radiation protection etc. A special section of the program was dedicated to educational and professional matters.
The conference gave the opportunity to the invited speakers to share their vision and thoughts on the future of Medical Physics in Europe to many scientists from across Europe to present their work and to participants to be updated with the latest research, educational and professional advances. They planned a wide Technical Exhibition where all relevant companies and vendors had the opportunity to exhibit their latest technological advances, products and services.
A few words about HAMP
The Hellenic Association of Medical Physicists is a scientific and professional association of Medical Physicists. The association was officially formed in 1969 and currently has approximately 260 members. The mission of HAMP is to advance medical physics practice in Greece, through scientific workshops, courses and seminars, to promote the professional improvement of medical physicists and finally to advance the quality of medical services for patients.

Medical physics happens to be one of the most interesting fields to work in. Ever since I was young, Physics has been my thing. It was not a surprise finding myself on this career path. Plus the earnings are good and the job always keeps me on my feet. As technology evolves, I evolve with it.
What Medical Physics Is All About
Generally healthcare scientists who have majored in the field of medical physics apply pure physics combined with other technical skills in the field of medicine to aid in the prevention, diagnosing and treatment of various diseases and related health conditions. In addition, we carry out researches, develop and test the functionality of equipment used by medical personnel. We are specialists in developing equipment that is used in such areas as ultrasound, radiotherapy, and nuclear medicine physiological monitoring and laser technology.
Medical physics has two major divides namely the radiation therapy and diagnostic imaging. Radiation therapy involves the use of radiation that has high energy in cancer treatment. In this field, the medical physicist is involved in the planning of treatment and identifying the design, testing, calibration and troubleshooting the radiotherapy machine.
My specialty is diagnostic Imaging. We are involved in areas that involve the use of ultrasound, X-rays, magnetic resonance as well as nuclear medicine meant for imaging patients. The main duties here involve purchasing and installing the machines, testing the condition of the machine, quality control and machine operation. In both cases of radiation and diagnostic imaging, the physicists are involved in teaching and research.
Regional Regulations and Global Networks
As medical physicists, we work closely with both national member organizations and international organizations so as to deliberate on what is best in the field. First, this enables us to learn from each other. Secondly, the regulations keep us in line. Our actions directly affect peoples’ health and lives. That much power cannot come without responsibility. In America, there is the American Association of Physicists in Medicine. This is a professional organization that has more than 8000 scientists who are dedicated to upholding accuracy, quality and safety in the use of radiation in any medical procedures inclusive of radiation therapy and medical imaging.
Generally this group of scientists is known as medical physicists and is spread across medical departments. The dispersing of these physicists is because their major responsibility is to connect the patient and the physician through technology that produces radiation in both diagnosis and treatment. They work to ensure that the radiation treatment is safely and accurately delivered among the imaging and radiation prescribed patients.
Internationally, medical physicists have an organization that is responsible for advancing medical physics worldwide through dissemination of technical and scientific information, fostering the education and professional development of physicists and promoting high quality medical services for patients.
International organization for medical physicists is the body that is charged with this work. This organization closely collaborates with other bodies such as WHO, ILO, IAEA amongst others to reach the goal as above described. You will find that a medical physicist will come in handy in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Mammography is tasking and requires to be conducted by personnel that is qualified and with the special training on the field.
In this field, the medical physicist has a major role in the establishment and maintenance of high standards of practice or the facilities used in mammography. The physicist will closely work with other medical personnel and is regularly consulted of aspects that have to do with image protocols, performance of the equipment and the risk assessment of radiation on the patient and staff.
Sharing Knowledge and Experiences
It is a good idea that countries develop the habit of exchanging medical physicists. This is a way of ensuring that new techniques are passed over to those countries that still rely on the old methods. Dissemination of scientific knowledge can only be achieved by this. Plus we wouldn’t mind travelling around, seeing new places like Athens for example (which is completely beautiful by the way), and taking in the sites and sounds. Of course this will only happen during after-work hours. Sponsoring of physicists from developing countries to attend seminars and workshops organized by the member’s organizations plays a greater role too in the dissemination of the information. This leads to an increased practice on the safety and accuracy of the radiation procedures.
With all this said, it would be a good thing to remind you that a healthy diet is paramount to good health. If one practices a healthy diet plan, cases of illnesses that require treatment by radiation will be reduced. This does not apply here alone but also to other illnesses that may damage the body functioning. Eat healthy and avoid the expenses that come with medication.
